Year 3 & 4

Curriculum

In year 3 and 4 we follow the National Literacy and Numeracy revised framework for the teaching of Literacy and Numeracy.  The children enjoy daily maths and literacy lessons.  We teach other subjects through cross curricular topic work where subjects are combined to create succinct units of work, offering stimulating learning experiences. We aim to provide all children with a broad and balanced curriculum, which allows the maximum opportunity for academic, social and emotional growth.

Children in year 3 and 4 are taught in a variety of ways – as a whole class, in small groups or individually depending on the nature of lesson. Curriculum areas will be reflected in activities and displays within the school.

The following subjects are taught in line with National Curriculum requirements.

The Core Subjects :

English, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communication Technology (I.C.T.)

The Foundation Subjects:

History, Geography, Art and Design, Design Technology, P.E., P.S.H.E. and Music.

In addition all children will receive religious education of a broadly Christian nature.

Our Current Topic

This term we will be finding out about the olympics past and present.  This topic will encompass PE, Art, history, geography, DT and ICT.  The science focus for this term is on light and shadow and rocks and soils.  Both of these topics will involve the children in carrying out lots of practical investigations and we will be making use of our allotment visits to apply what we have learnt in class   These practical investigations will also incorporate the data handling skills the children have learnt in numeracy together with their instructional writing skills.

We will be looking at a range of different text types in literacy, including adventure and mystery stories and myths and fables.  Children will continue to have the opportunity to develop their instructional writing in literacy, science and DT lessons.  In addition, the children will continue to have regular opportunities to develop their creative writing skills.  In numeracy the children will be continuing to develop their skills in counting, partitioning and calculating, securing number facts and understanding shape, handling data and measures.

PE and Allotment Visits

Our PE days for the first half of the summer term will be on a monday and a wednesday.  Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school for those days.  They will need trainers or plimsoles as we will be having a lot of our PE lessons outside, weather permitting.  Throughout the summer term we are planning on visiting the allotment on Monday afternoons so please ensure your child has their allotment clothes in school on a Monday.  Thank you for your support.
